How I Hold Us

With a trembling, open palm

Using my body as a shield from wind gusts

Turning as often as possible to find the sun beams

I don’t close my fingers

That would diminish the sun

I need to trust that we can withstand the wind

I want us to always have a 360 view of possibility

A clenched fist offers hard security

Gripping a delusion of permanence

Choking off sight lines

Suffocating slowly to save a fall

I hold us with an open palm

Knowing that letting go may be required

for happiness

Knowing that my body may not protect from every gust

that rain may soak

that hail may pelt

anticipating a fall

Exposed and vulnerable

Quivering and squinting

Alive with love
